How to Prepare Outdoor Christmas Lights for Winter

Outdoor Christmas lights are a popular way to decorate for the holidays. While traditionally used to adorn homes and yards, they are also increasingly being used to decorate businesses and public spaces.

There are many different types of outdoor Christmas lights available, from string lights and icicle lights to net lights and projector lights. While each type has its own unique look, they all serve the same purpose: to bring holiday cheer to any space. Whether hung from the eaves of a house or wound around a lamppost, outdoor Christmas lights are a surefire way to spread some holiday cheer.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Keep your outdoor Christmas lights dry and clean.
  • 2. Inspect your outdoor Christmas lights regularly
  • 3. Store your outdoor Christmas lights in a cool, dry place.
  • 4. Use only high-quality light bulbs and fixtures.
  • 5. Do not overload electrical outlets.
  • 6. Use only UL-listed extension cords.
  • 7. Keep away from flammable materials.
  • 8. Turn off all lights when you leave home or go to bed.
  • 9. Use a timer for convenience and safety.
  • 10. Always consult an electrician if you have any doubts about wiring or safety concerns.
  • Conclusion

1. Keep your outdoor Christmas lights dry and clean.

One of the best ways to spread holiday cheer is by decorating your home with outdoor Christmas lights. Unfortunately, if your lights are damp or dirty, they can become a safety hazard. To avoid any accidents, be sure to keep your lights dry and clean. If your lights are exposed to moisture, they can short-circuit and start a fire. To prevent this, make sure that you hang your lights in a protected area, such as under an awning or in an enclosed porch.

2. Inspect your outdoor Christmas lights regularly

It’s that time of year again! Time to unpack the boxes of lights, climb precariously onto the roof, and deck the halls with boughs of electricity. But before you can enjoy the twinkling lights of the season, there’s one important task that must be done: inspection. Just as you wouldn’t put on a threadbare coat or eat expired food, you shouldn’t use outdated or damaged holiday lights.

3. Store your outdoor Christmas lights in a cool, dry place.

If you want your Christmas lights to last for years and next winter to come, it’s important to store them properly. Ideally, you should keep them in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight. This will help to prevent the wires from overheating and melting.

Wrapping the lights around a piece of cardboard can also help to keep them from getting tangled. And if you’re really concerned about your lights lasting for a long time, you can always invest in some LED bulbs. They use less power and generate less heat, so they’re less likely to cause problems down the road. By following these simple tips, you can make sure that your holiday season is filled with light for years to come.

4. Use only high-quality light bulbs and fixtures.

If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for ways to save a little money. From energy-efficient appliances to streaming services that eliminate the need for expensive cable packages, there are many ways to cut costs without sacrificing quality.

When it comes to lighting, however, skimping is not an option. While it may be tempting to buy the cheapest light bulbs you can find, doing so will ultimately cost you more in the long run. Low-quality light bulbs are not only less effective, but they also tend to burn out much faster than their high-quality counterparts. For you to lessen the hassle and to have peace of mind, you may reach out to the experts like Blingle!.

5. Do not overload electrical outlets.

When it comes to electrical safety, one of the most important things to remember is not to overload outlets. This can happen more easily than you might think, especially if you have a lot of devices that need to be plugged in. When an outlet is overloaded, it can start to overheat, which can lead to a fire.

6. Use only UL-listed extension cords.

No one likes being tethered to an outlet. It’s inconvenient and it limits your range of motion. That’s why extension cords are so handy. They give you the freedom to move around while still being able to use your electronic devices.

But not all extension cords are created equal. In fact, using the wrong kind of cord can be dangerous. That’s why it’s important to only use extension cords that are UL-listed. UL-listed cords have been tested and approved by Underwriters Laboratories, a global safety science company. These cords are designed to be safe for both indoor and outdoor use and can handle heavy-duty loads.

7. Keep away from flammable materials.

While it might seem like common sense to avoid flammable materials, you’d be surprised at how often people find themselves in close proximity to things that can go up in flames.

8. Turn off all lights when you leave home or go to bed.

If you’re like most people, you’re probably guilty of leaving a light on when you leave home or go to bed. While it may not seem like a big deal, all that wasted electricity can add up over time. Not to mention, it’s bad for the environment.

So next time you head out the door, be sure to turn off all the lights. And if you can’t remember whether you turned them off or not, just give your switch a little flip before you go to bed.

9. Use a timer for convenience and safety.

For many people, Christmas is a time of year when they go all out with decorations. One popular decoration is stringing up lights. While this can create a beautiful and festive atmosphere, it can also be a bit of a hassle.

Have you ever been in the middle of untangling a string of lights when you realize that you have to be somewhere else? Or maybe you’ve finished putting up the lights only to find that one of the bulbs is burned out. With a timer, these problems can be easily solved. Simply set the timer for the desired length of time and let it do its job.

10. Always consult an electrician if you have any doubts about wiring or safety concerns.

While the holidays are a time for festivity and joy, they’re also a time when many homeowners find themselves on the receiving end of an electrical shock. That’s because holiday decorations like Christmas lights often put a strain on already-overloaded circuits, leading to shorts and sparking outlets.

And while it might be tempting to try to fix the problem yourself, it’s always best to consult an electrician. They have the training and experience to safely assess the situation and make any necessary repairs.

Conclusion

So, there you have it. Now that you know how to properly prepare your outdoor Christmas lights for winter, you can rest assured that they will last well into the New Year – and maybe even longer! Just be sure to give them a good cleaning before putting them away in storage so they’re ready to go next year. Have a happy and safe holiday season!
